10 years Indonesia celebrates the sad anniversary of tsunami


Indonesia has far paid the highest price among the countries of the Indian Ocean tsunami-there just ten years. This is in Banda Aceh, on the western tip of the Indonesian archipelago, until Sunday will celebrate this sad anniversary. Nearly 170,000 people died in Indonesia and 500,000 were displaced. To honor them, thousands of Indonesians gathered to pray in the Baiturrahman Grand Mosque, one of the few buildings in Banda Aceh to have resisted the giant wave that hit the island of Sumatra in 2004 .


On 26 December 2004 precisely to 7:58 pm local time, a magnitude 9.3 earthquake on the Richter scale occurred off Indonesia, causing a tsunami that sweeps all Indian Ocean coast . Within hours, the villages are wiped out and at least 230,000 people were killed.
