In Israel, one of the few Arab-Hebrew bilingual schools was vandalized and partially burned last night. The property is located in West Jerusalem. Arab slogans were inscribed nearby. Authorities suspect Jewish settlers and far-right activists.
The school belongs to a school called "Hand in Hand". It strives to promote co-existence between Israelis and Palestinians.
"Those who did this hurt the Jews as Arabs, said Hatem Matar, head of the Council of parents. They prey to an ideal that we try to live for 15 years. It's sad, obviously, but I think it can also help to strengthen ties in our community. "
Israeli Justice Minister Tzipi Livni went there. She promised "zero tolerance against discrimination and racism."
Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu also condemned the attack. "We are currently working hard to restore calm in Jerusalem, he said. We can not tolerate any such attack, whoever the perpetrators. We can not accept that a bilingual school is so on fire. "
This incident comes at a time of increased tension between Israelis and Palestinians, between Jews and Arabs in Jerusalem and throughout the region. In recent weeks in particular, followed several reprisal attacks have expanded a little more the gap between communities.
