Syria: Idlib falls into the hands of the rebels


The city of Idlib, northern Syria, fell into the hands of several rebel groups, including the Al-Nusra Front, affiliated to Al Qaeda. On images on the Internet, we see fighters destroying to ground a symbol of the regime, a statue of Hafez Assad, the father of the current Syrian president and former strongman of the country.


By seizing Idlib, the rebels now control the entire province of the same name. This city of 100,000 inhabitants is located close to the strategic road linking Aleppo to Damascus. It is also less than three hours away from the province of Rakka, the stronghold of the Islamic State Group (EI).
