General elections in Nigeria: the feverish expectation of results

Nigeria is awaiting the final results of the presidential and parliamentary elections this weekend.

The first partial figures indicate that the two main presidential candidates are neck-and-neck. On one side there is the outgoing head of state Goodluck Jonathan and the other, Muhammadu Buhari, the main opposition candidate.

Despite fighting between the Nigerian army and Islamist Boko Haram in the north of the country, the elections were generally well conducted, according to various observers deployed for the occasion.

"The electoral process was marked by a certain disorganization; operations have sometimes had to be extended, recognizes Hannah Roberts, deputy head of the observer mission of the European Union. But we believe there is no evidence of systematic manipulation of the process. "

In any case, the results are expected with a certain excitement in the country, the most populous in Africa. Witness the events from Sunday by the opposition in the city of Port Harcourt.

In the last elections in 2011, violence had pitted supporters of the two main candidates. Violence that had nearly a thousand deaths.
