Clashes erupted Monday morning in Japan around the proposed move of the US base of Funtenma.
The governor of Okinawa want the operations are stopped for movement of the air base to the town of Nago, east of the island. But for Tokyo, it is "extremely important" to make the field Futenma air base to its inhabitants. The latter complain of noise pollution, the risk of accidents and see an open door to crime.
Moving the site to Nago was decided in 1996, the United States sought to appease local anger after the rape of a schoolgirl by US servicemen. The folder is then stuck with incessant debates.
Okinawa is home to most of the 47,000 US troops based in Japan, and their presence is resented by the locals.
