Iran: still obstacles before an agreement

Iran and the major powers they will reach an agreement in the nuclear issue? Diplomats meeting in Lausanne, Switzerland, theoretically have until midnight Tuesday to sign a text.

At this stage, several issues are still outstanding. Blocking focuses on the lifting of sanctions on Iran for nearly 10 years. Tehran requires that these sanctions lifted block upon signature of an agreement. Westerners them want a gradual lifting, which depend on the fulfillment of the commitments made by Iran.

Another sticking point: the duration of the agreement. The great powers want a strict control framework of Iran's nuclear activities at least 15 years, but Iran does not want to commit beyond ten years, according to a Western diplomat.

The various parties met on Monday. Reflecting the importance of the matter: all the foreign ministers involved were present: Iranian Mohammad Javad Zarif, the American John Kerry, Russian Sergei Lavrov, Chinese Wang Yi, the French Laurent Fabius, Briton Philip Hammond and Germany's Frank-Walter Steinmeier. Some have changed their agenda to enable the signing of an agreement.

"This is the sixth day of negotiations between Iran and the 5 + 1 group says Reihaneh Mazaheri, special correspondent euronews Lausanne. She added that this day could be "one of the largest since (the last round of discussions) last November."

The idea is to have, at first, a text that sets the general rules of the Iranian nuclear program and, secondly, a document that definitively resolve the dispute by the end of June.
