Shipwreck of migrants off Sicily: a man arrested


A man believed to be one of the smugglers involved in the sinking of a boat migrants, which left at least 50 dead off the coast of Sicily on Wednesday, was arrested.


Aged 20, he is of Senegalese origin, and has admitted being recruited in Libya, to operate a boat from one bank to the auter of the Mediterranean. On board were 400 migrants.


He was taken from prison in Ragusa, Sicily, and is accused of illegal immigration.


The boat was carrying would-be emigrants from Syria, Palestine, Libya, Tunisia and sub-Saharan Africa.


In January and February, around 8,000 migrants have landed on the Italian coast, an increase of over 40% compared to 2014, which had already risen sharply.
