She took off Friday evening from Baikonur, Kazakhstan, with three astronauts on board, an American and two Russians. Two of them, Mikhail Kornienko and Scott Kelly, left for a one-year mission, the longest period since the ISS welcomes passengers, the usual duration being about six months.
According to NASA, this mission aims to collect biomedical data to prepare long-term manned missions in space. Scientists hope to send men to Mars by 2030.
