This is jubilation in Kaduna in central Nigeria and elsewhere in the country. Nigerians rejoiced Tuesday of the victory of the opposition and former putschist Muhammadu Buhari in the presidential election held last weekend. A victory recognized by his rival, incumbent President.
Later in the evening, the national electoral commission said Muhammadu Buhari had obtained a landslide victory in the state of Borno, in north-east of the country, the epicenter of the insurgency of Boko Haram.
Muhammadu Buhari is a Muslim from the north. Throughout his campaign, he criticized the outgoing head of state not to have curbed Islamist insurgency. Posing as a convert to democracy, former General also promised Nigerians to rid them of corruption.
The European Union congratulated Muhammadu Buhari on his election and to thank the outgoing President Goodluck Jonathan, a southern Christian, for his contribution to the consolidation of democracy in the country. A country that has experienced six military coups since independence in 1960.
Muhammadu Buhari has won 21 of the 36 states that make up Nigeria.
