Senegal: Karim Wade convicted of "illicit enrichment"


The Senegalese former minister and son of former President Abdoulaye Wade, Karim Wade, was sentenced to six years in prison and more than 210 million euro fine for "illicit enrichment."


This verdict could remove him from the next presidential, two days after being nominated as a candidate of the main opposition party. The Senegalese Democratic Party was founded by Karim's father, former President Abdoulaye Wade, came this afternoon attended the verdict.

Karim Wade in Dakar is incarcerated in prison since April 17, 2013. His defense will appeal to the Supreme Court seeking to quash and set aside the judgment.

The verdict of the Court of repression of illicit enrichment (CREI) does not mention prohibition of civil rights.
