PKK leader calls from prison and asked the separatist Kurdish rebels to lay down arms. Abdullah Ocalan, serving a sentence of life imprisonment, was read a message on Saturday in which he called the Kurdistan Workers' Party to "replace the armed struggle by the policy."
Turkish President Recep Tayyip Ergdogan responded to this statement with caution.
"Disarmament is crucial to our eyes," he has said. "But we must insist that those who lay down their arms are the members of this terrorist organization."
The statement of Abdullah Öcalan comes as the Conservative government is pushing for an agreement before the parliamentary elections on 7 June. In thirty years, the conflict with the PKK killed 40 000 people.
