Iraq: army entered Tikrit

It is a new breakthrough in the offensive launched by the Iraqi army to take over Tikrit jihadist Islamic State group.

Iraqi forces entered Wednesday in this strategic city they encircled for days. This was announced officers and officials.

The day before, Iraqi forces took control of Al-Alam, located north of Tikrit.

Tikrit, the birthplace of former President Saddam Hussein, is in the hands of radical insurgents since last summer.

According to the provincial governor and security officials, the military took control of part of the Qadisiyah district, located in the north of the city.

According to an officer, the fight is difficult. "We are not in front of the fighters on the ground but a bomb and sniper ground," he said.

In addition, observers fear of reprisals against civilians by the Shiite militiamen who took part in the fighting alongside the Iraqi army. The area is predominantly Sunni.
