In France, the UMP topped the first round of the county election held on Sunday.
According to initial estimates, the party led by Nicolas Sarkozy would get, with its allies, at least 35% of the vote.
This vote is a setback for the Socialist Party (PS), together with its allies, would have met almost 25% of the vote.
Finally, the National Front (FN) happen third with nearly 24% of the vote, making a breakthrough in several departments.
The abstention amounts to 48.7%, a high rate, but less than expected.
The second round will be held next Sunday.
