The president and CEO of HSBC bank apologized for the practices of their subsidiary in Switzerland, accused of having helped thousands of clients evade taxes. Interviewed by the Committee of the UK Parliament Treasury, Douglas Flint and Stuart Gulliver qualified these methods '' unacceptable ''.
"I would like to make an apology on my part and that of Douglas Flint unacceptable events that took place in our private bank in Switzerland in the mid 2000. These are excuses we would like to present and our customers, shareholders and the general public. This was clearly unacceptable and it hurt
the reputation of HSBC '' said Stuart Gulliver, the general manager.
A survey of several media revealed that the bank was at the heart of an international tax fraud system: about 180 billion euros of rich clients have transited through accounts in Switzerland between 2006 and 2007. This is the famous scandal Swissleaks.
Taking advantage of hearing patrons of HSBC bank, protesters gathered in front of Parliament in London to ask more severity, including imprisonment, against fraudsters.
