Remembrance ceremonies in Asia, ten years after the tsunami


Commemorations in Indonesia.


There decade, the country faced the worst disaster in its history. 170,000 people were swept away by a tsunami, mostly in Aceh province.


Only Great Mosque resisted the wave breaking in places which reached thirty meters. On Friday, thousands of people were left there to pray and pay homage to the fallen.


A dozen countries have been affected by the tsunami that killed a total of 226,000 victims.


Several thousand people have died in Thailand, including 2,000 foreign tourists.


The tsunami was triggered by an earthquake of magnitude 9 on the Richter scale, the earthquake whose epicenter was off the Indonesian island of Sumatra.


The disaster sparked a burst of generosity throughout the world: 11 billion euros had been collected to help the survivors.
