Marcel Pagnol's trilogy back to the cinema?

The family of Marcel Pagnol, through the , the company in charge of the author's films, has launched a to restore the three feature films "Marius," "Fanny" and "Caesar" on the occasion of the 120th anniversary of the birth of the filmmaker.


This restoration is to restore badly damaged negatives, especially "Marius" and "Fanny", and scanning.

The original films "Marius" are stained, eaten by mold, covered with tears and splices stand; "Fanny" was never restored to date, and "Caesar" also has many damaged seams.

This film will be restored to its long version, 20 minutes, and scanned in ultra-HD (4k). For the three films, the original framing, 1:20, will be retained.


The objective is that the company gives? Restore early 2015 for a theatrical release at the Cannes Film Festival to celebrate the sixtieth anniversary of the presidency of the director in the Festival.


For now, the CMF - MPC set a first ceiling of EUR 50 000, funded at 56% at the time of writing. The public has until the end of January to attend.


As explained Nicolas Pagnol on of the project, it has already received the support of the CNC (National Centre for Cinema and the Moving Image, the French Cinematheque, the Arte channel and the Cultural Fund Franco American). This work will be led by William Schiffmann, cinematographer of the last two films of Michel Hazanavicius, "The Artist" and "The Search", and Nicolas Pagnol himself.

This trilogy Marseille tour in the 30s contributed to Marcel Pagnol a full filmmaker. The scenarios and dialogues of the first two films were written by Marcel Pagnol from his plays. He led the actors but the realization was entrusted to other filmmakers (Alexander Korda for "Marius" and Marc Allégret for "Fanny"). The third installment, "Caesar" is directly shot by Marcel Pagnol from an original screenplay.


These three films were huge popular success. They have greatly contributed to the careers of actors Raimu, Pierre Fresnay, Orane Demazis and Fernand Charpin.
