Ukaine 2014, a black year

On the Independence Square in Kiev, the holiday season has a bitter taste. 2014 has been a bad year marked by war in the east of the country and an unprecedented economic crisis.

Here in Maidan, the pro-European activists have obtained the departure of former President Yanukovych. Some reminisce the sacrifices of the revolution and the disillusionment that followed.

"The revolution gave us hope for things to change," said the activist, "but no one expected a war starts. This year has been a year of trauma. "

After the annexation of the Crimea by Russia, the country faces eight months to the pro-Russian separatist rebellion in the Donbass basin. Speaking to the press, Prime Minister Arseniy Yatsenyuk will prevail.

"Why Putin sent his army in Ukraine? What is its purpose? Protect the Russian language? But all Ukraine speaks Russian, we do not need protection. Protect Donestk and Luhansk? But who? 5000 people were killed, that's what is responsible for Russia. "

In the East, the attempts to cease-fire have so far been unsuccessful. The only tangible agreements focused on the exchange of prisoners between the two camps. A meeting is to be held on January 15 in Astana between the President of Ukraine Petro Poroshenko and his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin.
