Croatian president Ivo Josipovic and rival elbow to elbow


It will take a second round to decide between the two leading candidates in the presidential elections in Croatia. The outgoing president, Social Democrat Ivo Josipovic, was released ahead of the first round with about 38.5% of the votes. A lawyer by training, he was criticized for his considered too conciliatory policy. Despite its limited powers, the president promised to improve the economy, as his conservative rival Kolinda Grabar Kitarovic, who heels with about 37% of the vote.


Head of the Croatian diplomacy from 2005 to 2008, she wants to see the results of the first round a willingness to change. She was also an ambassador to Washington and the NATO Deputy Secretary General.


The second round will therefore take place on 11 January. With the approach of parliamentary scheduled for late 2015, the presidential election will also evaluate the balance of power between the left in power, facing a crisis that lasts, and the conservative opposition.
