The grand jury in St. Louis County has decided not to prosecute the officer who shot this summer a young Black man who was unarmed.
The decision, expected in three months, revives racial tensions that had already shaken this small Missouri town after the death of Michael Brown, hit by six of the twelve bullets fired by Darren Wilson on August 9 officer.
Faced with the risk of riots, the US president addressed the nation less than an hour after the announcement of the grand jury. "First, we are a nation based on the rule of law, so we have to accept that this decision was the responsibility of the grand jury. There are Americans who agree, others are deeply disappointed and even angry. That's understandable. But I join with Michael's parents to ask anyone wishing to do so to protest peacefully, "insisted Obama.
Elsewhere in the United States, from New York to Washington DC, to Los Angeles and Seattle, hundreds of demonstrators also protested against what they called "denial of justice".
