East or West: Moldova decides the way forward

Voting day today in Moldova. Three million voters renew their parliament and will have to choose between pro-European continuity and rapprochement of Russia.

A pro-Russian party has been banned from the election for lack of funding came from abroad but the path is not provided free to the Liberal Democrats, as the communists will play a role in the election.

"It is of course desirable that the Communists are a constructive political force, said Dumitru Diacov, leader of the Democratic Party. We could have a pro-European coalition, or a pro-European opposition. So we need to find opportunities to work together. "

The pro-Russian party Fatherland was left out of the election three days before the meeting, a ban criticized by Moscow that issued "serious doubts about the democratic nature" of the elections.

"In a situation where a significant political party is excluded from the race, you can imagine that the result and determined in advance," joked Ilian Casu, the Fatherland party.

The two Moldovan political blocs are credited each 40% of the vote. The elections were monitored by 700 international observers.

Sergio Cantone, Chisinau: "These elections are influenced by a lot of controversy, and the results will bear the mark. The aspirations of Moldova seem more pro-European, but the next government will anyway consider and take into account other aspirations. "
