Bangladesh: an atheist blogger killed in the streets with machetes

In Bangladesh, an Islamist movement claimed responsibility for the assassination Thursday in Dhaka by an American original blogger

Bangladeshi. Avijit Roy was attacked in the street with a machete while returning from a book fair with his wife. He succumbed to his injuries while being transferred to hospital. His assailants managed to escape.

The scene took place in front of witnesses. "I saw someone get out a big knife. He attacked the man from behind. He knocked on the head and shoulders. I called for help. But nobody came to save, '' said the woman.

This murder, reminiscent of another blogger in 2013, was denounced by protesters gathered in Dhaka. Avijit Roy was an atheist. Staunch defender of secularism, he had received numerous threats as a result of articles in which he denounced religious extremism.
