India: the drama of a mass sterilization

In India, the state of Chhattisgarh has conducted a mass sterilization of women on Saturday. In five hours, 83 women were made. Since then, 10 have died and sixty suffer from complications. 24 of them are currently in a serious condition and were hospitalized in Bilaspur.

An investigation has been opened. A surgeon continued and four officials in the health sector have been suspended.

"The status of these women is serious, their blood pressure is low, we focus on their care, not on what has caused their condition. The cause of death, we can determine that through the autopsy if there is an investigation, "said Dr. Ramesh Murty.

"Women were made and then left. This happened in a desolate place where there are no adequate facilities "testified a relative of a patient.

The people of Bilaspur have expressed their anger at the hospital.

Mass sterilization is the method of control of the most common birth in India, where many states organize such operations on a voluntary basis in exchange for financial compensation (20 euros).

Each family of a deceased woman will be compensated up to 400,000 rupees, or 5,200 euros.

Last year, the government of West Bengal (East) had been heavily criticized after the release of pictures showing women left unconscious in a field after a mass sterilization. The hospital was unable to accommodate a large number of patients.

Between 2013 and 2014, more than four million women were sterilized in India, according to government data.

From 2009 to 2012, the government paid financial compensation for 568 women died from sterilization.
