Havana for a restored historic center of its 500th anniversary

Giving back to the old town of Havana to its former glory. An ambitious mission launched 20 years ago by Fidel Castro and bears fruit today. While the capital will celebrate five years in the 500th anniversary of its founding, the historic center, a UNESCO World Heritage of UNESCO, is the object of attention. Many formerly dilapidated facades have been completely renovated. But much remains to be done according to the man in charge of the project, Eusebio Leal.

"I am happy that we do not already celebrating the 500th anniversary, the 495th fair," he said, "we still have the opportunity in the next five years to make extra effort to Havana against the odds and not just repainting the facades. "

More than 350 buildings have been restored. An expensive project funded by the tourism industry. Some residents were treated to a guided tour of the works. "We are very impressed with these restorations," said the woman, "it was like seeing Havana to the colonial period. The tour guide made us realize the sacrifices it took to get there, not only for construction but also for conservation. "

San Cristobal de la Habana, as originally called the Cuban capital, was the last of the seven cities founded by Diego Velasquez Spanish, it was November 16, 1519.
