In Germany, the funeral of former President Richard von Weizsäcker was celebrated Wednesday in Berlin, in the presence, in particular, Chancellor Angela Merkel. Former German Chancellor Gerhard Schröder and former Polish President Lech Walesa, were also present.
Richard von Weizsäcker died on January 31 at the age of 94.
He was Mayor of West Berlin from 1981 to 1984 and President of the Federal Republic between 1984 and 1994.
He was considered one of the great moral figures of the post-war. In particular, he initiated an awareness vis-à-vis Nazism. He also worked for the rapprochement between East and West.
